“Brita worked with me as a researcher and writer on a public art project for the Flinders Island hospital. Her observation regarding the peculiarities of islander speech became the generator for the three dimensional, wall-mounted work. Brita saw that there were beautiful peculiarities in the way that “islandness” was expressed, remembering the blunt, yet poetic observations from a set of diaries written by sisters who farmed in the north of Flinders – “Boiling in the PM. Snares in the morning.”; “A lovely day today. I feel a bit tired. No one about much. Saw a car go by.“ She and I then researched together to find other original material reflecting her observations, drawing from historical material and more contemporary expressions.
Brita carefully sifted through the original material and drew out those quotes that worked together to build a form of portrait of Flinders Island. Her generating idea and the process established the basis for an artwork that was very well received within the hospital, with curious passersby (during installation) immediately reading and identifying with their own unique dialect. Brita drew from both her own intimate knowledge of the island and her skill as a writer to stitch together a poetic, poignant and witty portrait of a place.”
